Getting Started with the Reusable Learning Object Specification System

4. Getting Started - Creating a New RLO Specification

After being given access to the HELM RLO Specification tool and logging in to the system, users are presented with a landing page showing any specifications they may have created (this will be empty on the first visit) and a list of any specifications they may have been added to as a collaborator.

There are two additional features, one titled “RLO Activities Catalogue” which allows the exploration of a growing catalogue of interactive activities developed as part of RLOs within the HELM Open website and secondly the “Create a New Specification” feature which is used to create a new specification.

Once the “Create a new specification” button is clicked, a new screen is presented in which the user supplies some basic information regarding the RLO specification:

  • Title
  • Description
  • Learning objective

There is also the opportunity to provide information about the any activities or assessments at this stage but they are not essential or even required.

Once the “Save Button” is clicked the new RLO specification is created and the user is taken to a view of their RLO specification. In this view all the information provided so far is present and the user will see that their specification has been pre-populated with five content sections (which can be edited, deleted, reordered as desired).
